Baking Fun with Kids. Learn about the benefits & from our terrible failed attempt in the kitchen!

My kids and I decided to bake a cake together for their birthday. We were feeling ambitious and wanted to try a fancy recipe that included several layers and intricate decorations. But things quickly spiral-ed out of control.

First, we forgot to grease the cake pans, so the first layer stuck and crumbled into pieces when we tried to remove it. My daughter suggested we just glue the pieces together with frosting, so we gave it a shot. It looked a bit lopsided, but we were determined to soldier on.

Next, we attempted to make homemade frosting, but my son got a little too excited with the mixer and ended up splattering it all over the kitchen walls. We spent the next hour cleaning up the sticky mess while trying not to laugh too hard.

As we moved on to the decorations, things got even more ridiculous. They wanted to create a fondant sculpture of their favourite cartoon character to place on top of the cake. However, their skills with fondant were not exactly top-notch, and we ended up with a misshapen blob that vaguely resembled a cartoon character, if you squinted really hard.

But the real comedy came when it was time to light the candles. My son had insisted on getting a giant "6" candle to celebrate his age, but we didn't have a big enough cake to fit it on. So, we tried to balance it precariously on the edge of the cake. As soon as we lit the candle, it promptly toppled over and set the cake on fire. We managed to put it out quickly, but not before the smoke alarm went off and scared the cat.

In the end, our cake was a disaster, but we had so much fun baking and laughing together that it didn't even matter. And my kids still talks about that hilariously terrible cake to this day.

Funny story aside there are truly benefits in teaching kids how to bake.

Baking is a wonderful activity to do with kids of all ages. Not only is it a fun and enjoyable way to spend time together, but it also provides numerous benefits that can help children in their personal and social development.

  1. Boosts Confidence: When children learn how to bake, they develop a sense of pride and accomplishment. Seeing their hard work and effort turn into something delicious and enjoyable can be a huge confidence booster for kids.

  2. Improves Math Skills: Baking is a great way to introduce kids to basic math concepts such as measuring, fractions, and addition. Measuring ingredients, counting eggs, and dividing portions all help children practice and improve their math skills in a practical and fun way.

  3. Encourages Creativity: Baking is an art as well as a science, and it encourages kids to be creative and imaginative. From choosing flavors and colors to decorating their creations, kids can express themselves in unique and exciting ways.

  4. Develops Fine Motor Skills: Baking requires a lot of fine motor skills, from mixing ingredients to rolling dough and decorating cakes. These activities help develop and refine children's fine motor skills, which are important for activities such as writing, drawing, and playing instruments.

  5. Promotes Responsibility: Baking requires children to follow instructions and pay attention to details. This promotes a sense of responsibility and helps kids understand the importance of following directions and taking care of their own projects.

  6. Builds Social Skills: Baking with others is a great way to build social skills such as teamwork, communication, and sharing. Children learn to work together, share responsibilities, and communicate their ideas and preferences with others.

  7. Teaches Healthy Habits: Baking can be a great opportunity to teach kids about healthy eating habits and making nutritious choices. Kids can learn about different ingredients, their nutritional value, and how to make healthy substitutions in recipes.

Overall, baking with kids is a fun and rewarding activity that provides numerous benefits for children's development. It promotes creativity, confidence, responsibility, and social skills, while also improving math and fine motor skills and teaching healthy habits.
